This weekend marked further progress in understanding and organizing the new house. Obscure lightbulb sizes, an ionizing air filtration system, and a WiFi-enabled oven are some of the more interesting and not fully functional features to which I have dedicated time. But, determining why the oven won't go into pairing mode is probably more of a distraction. (Yes, tier 1 support team, I rebooted the oven - seriously.) I don't honestly understand what I will do with an oven I can control with my phone. But, for every moment I am searching for a serial number, an installation manual, or a part, I am not staring at the news or the social profiles of people I know who believe this pandemic is not a "thing." It feels like I live in a very shallow and individualized version of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I am about ten silicone O-rings (85 mm outer diameter and 2.5 mm thickness) away from my next level of mental serenity.

Cases are growing exponentially. Hospitals are being swamped, which means there are no ICU beds in many areas, staffing shortages due to exposed and sick medical personnel. This morning, Astra Zeneca released data from the Oxford Trial on their COVID vaccine. The best data reflected a regimen that delivered a small initial dose, followed by a second larger dose.

There are some interesting comments and questions in the thread.
On Friday, I had a patient in my office say to me, "I think our country did everything we could. I'm not sure what healthcare workers expected." My response was simple, "We have a national problem with no coordinated federal response. Our leaders have failed to deliver consistent messaging (in fact the opposite), enough PPE, nor enough testing combined with tracking and tracing."
Here is a good overview of how New Zealand is doing it:

And, here is the kind of data that demonstrates what happens when there is not enough PPE. A recent prospective cohort trial finding a 50% failure of N95 masks after 48 hours of use. This study was well designed, a little small, but is real-world use of N95s in an ER setting. This data was presented on October 27, 20202, at the American College of Emergency Physicians meeting (ACEP). https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/940168_print

While I cannot fathom the methodological problems in the research, articles such as "The top 100 Popular Meat Dishes in the World" make this website a gem.

I unpacked my digital picture frame this weekend (it is a home-grown Raspberry Pi concoction - not just something you turn on). And, I found myself staring at photos from our past trips. Then I found this article with historical images of national parks from before they were national parks.
