December 22, 2020 Tuesday
I find preparing to take a break difficult. The me of next Monday (December 28th) will be a critical judge of how I spent my time between the 24th and the 27th. I know I am not alone in these Monday morning mental reviews. However, I wonder what many of our public figures think about when left alone with their thoughts. What are their internal metrics of success and failure? More than being a fly on the wall (or in the hair), it would be enlightening (or some other word) to hear some internal dialog one day.

Several loyal readers wrote to me yesterday regarding the news about the "new strain" or mutation of SARS-CoV-2. It appears there are at least two new strains of concern - one prevalent in the U.K. and one from South Africa.

Bottom line: this strain may be more contagious, may not be AS detectable by existing PCR testing, and (the South African mutation) may be more virulent in younger patients. BUT there are still many unknowns AND NO DATA to suggest the vaccine is less effective in these strains. I suspect it is already in the U.S. and elsewhere. Social distancing, masks, hand washing, and minimizing indoor time with crowds still protect against transmission. Clean hands, sharp minds, and don't panic.
Here is an outstanding Twitter thread on coronavirus facts from an epidemiologist.

I have a mix of emotions about this story. Good people are willing to risk their health to perform CPR on a selfish and thoughtless plane passenger. https://www.pix11.com/news/national/coronavirus/after-passenger-dies-on-united-flight-man-who-helped-him-has-covid-symptoms-and-passengers-warned
Here is a website that is the love child of Yelp and COVID prevention policy adherence reporting for various businesses and locations. Not a lot of data (and unsure how they vet veracity), but someone already put in a comment for the White House. I'll let you find it.
