What Adam is Reading 3-25-21

March 25, 2021, Thursday

I can think of many art projects that are appropriate for the home during remote schooling. Last night, I found myself supervising my 14-year-old carving linoleum to make printing blocks. While not quite welding or using power tools, I wonder if there are projects that do not require protective gloves, adult supervision, and lots of little linoleum scraps. I am eagerly awaiting the "spread ink and stamp on paper" phase of this project. And I pray we are not picking up a slab of marble and chisels next week (or a tree stump and a BYO chainsaw).

Despite the NIH comments, the AZ released additional data about their U.S. trial. There is a lot to celebrate here, with another vaccine the prevents severe illness.

I see some irony in getting rewarded for getting vaccinated with free large French fries and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I am sure Super Duper Fries are, well, super-duper? Pick your poison.

I keep an eye on Retraction Watch, a website and Twitter feed dedicated to (often scientific) articles removed for various data, methodologic, or peer review problems.

Here is their list of COVID-related retracted papers ( #1 is 5G tech and coronavirus).

Last week, in response to the AZ vaccine blood clot reports, Danish physician Niels Høiby publicly opined about the possibility of injection technique playing a role. (You can use Chrome's translate feature to read this article):

A loyal reader sent this video by a doctor of nursing, John Campbell. He does an excellent job reviewing the appropriate ways to give intramuscular injections and, more importantly, the data that supports (or doesn't) Dr. Høiby's assertions and recommendations.

Infographic of the day: Searching for Appropriate Adjectives
Some occasions do not pair well with adjectives, such as World Tuberculosis Day. As in, "Have a [Reflective? Thoughtful? Meaningful?] World Tuberculosis Day." Even if I don't know what to say to mark this occasion, Compound Interest has an infographic.

There should be an occasion <-> adjective matching website.

----Bonus Round -- Faces from the Past

I was reading about the Fayum Mummy Portraits last night. They are very realistic portraits painted on the sarcophagi of middle and upper-class Greeks and Romans living in Egypt in the early part of the common era (100-300 AD). These paintings are hauntingly realistic, a style of art not seen again for more than 1000 years - during the renaissance. Moreover, I also did not realize the most of the paintings from ancient Greece are lost. There was a lot more art than sculptures, frescos, and mosaics in the ancient world.
