What Adam is Reading 5-18-21

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

I have been thinking about the appropriate time to end these daily emails. It brings up an interesting question - what does it mean for a pandemic to end? And, when is there no longer value in sharing information and interpretation about the pandemic? It is clear that for an event that started so abruptly in March of 2020, a return to normalcy will be gradual and, it appears, erratic.

I will share more on these thoughts in the coming weeks and am happy to hear feedback in the interim.

The CDC weekly review from last Friday reported some very encouraging trends in testing positivity rates, hospitalizations, and death.

Medscape highlights the confusion stemming from last Thursday's CDC mask guidance. Here is a succinct summary of all the links I posted yesterday.

and here is an excellent example of why clear, consistent messaging about masks matters - pretty sure the virus doesn't know the difference between P.A., NY, and N.J. (But if it did, how would coronavirus feel about New Jersey‽)

As my favorite college professor used to say, "In politics there are no principles, there are only situations." Ohioans responded to the lottery announcement from last week by getting vaccinated in higher numbers.

India, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore are seeing ongoing and concerning trends in COVID case rates. (And, in some instances, hospitalizations and deaths).

--------Combined infographic and bonus round: Cicadas

On the East Coast, 17-year Cicadas (Brood X) have started emerging. My son aptly asked, "What is the purpose of an animal that lives underground for 17 years, emerges, lives a few weeks just to lay eggs and then gets eaten or dies?" It turns out there is a lot of value. Cicadas are like an annuity for the food chain - a dependable protein source in a world with a year-to-year weather variation.

Canadian Geographic offers this infographic:

(I'm sure Canadian cicadas are very polite, even the moody and unmotivated Brood X ones)
